FROM: Chad R. Eyler, WCO 6-67-2 York County
On a cold and snowy January 24, 2004, The Pennsylvania Game Commission began a partnership with the York County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited on waterfowl improvement projects on the York New Salem/Indian Rock Dam Game Lands located off Route 616 in York County. With the assistance and guidance of the York County Food and Cover Corps, the members of Ducks Unlimited began maintaining over forty wood duck nesting boxes placed along the Codorus Creek, which runs through the game lands. Members will begin an annual monitoring of the condition of the boxes, replacing or performing maintenance on the boxes if needed, and ascertain if the boxes are being used and by what species. The information provided by the members will be utilized in an annual count that is maintained by the Pennsylvania Game Commission to monitor wood duck nesting boxes in the numerous wetland areas owned or controlled by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Members also maintained and replaced mallard nesting structures within the several wetland areas found on the game lands.
While this project in normally performed by the members of the Food and Cover Corps in York County, this effort by Ducks Unlimited is another example of how conservation organizations throughout Pennsylvania., assist the Game Commission in its efforts to maintain, preserve, protect and manage wild birds and wild mammals in the Commonwealth. These vital partnerships with sportsmen’s clubs and conservation organizations are beneficial to the wildlife that is served, sportsmen and women, and all the citizens of Pennsylvania.
Members of the York Chapter of Ducks Unlimited that participated in the effort are: Shannon Brockmeyer, Tad Hoffmaster, Jim Jenkins, Daren Orwig, Eric Orwig, and Doug Senft. Members of the York County Food and Cover Corps that participated are: Mike Backel. Jeff Mackey. Martin Minnich and Land Management Officer Rich Skubish.
