Wood Duck Nest Project - April 2005
MARKLETON - The High Point Chapter of Ducks Unlimited sponsored a wood duck nest box construction event recently at Markleton.

| Brady Mason, Will Mashmeyer and Roger Mason (left to right) assemble a Wood Duck nest box. | Members of the Country Clovers 4-H Club and Allegheny Plateau Audubon Society teamed with Ducks Unlimited to build 65 nest boxes. The work was completed using an assembly line’ work style which resulted in completion of the work before noon.
A meal of homemade vegetarian chili and loose meat for sandwiches was served to the 26 volunteers who helped.
Wood ducks nest throughout the county in hollow trees and nest boxes. Somerset and the Somerset Ramada Lake is a good location for seeing these birds, particularly at the shallow end during May through July while broods are being fledged.
Many local businesses helped with this project by providing materials, services, or by underwriting expenses, including Berlin Lumber, SDC Building Center, Tinkey Bros. Lumber, John Stevanus Welding, Riversport - Lucky Dog Cafe, Sheetz, SouthSide Express, Summit Tech Lab and the Somerset Ramada Inn.

Lunch was provided to helpers. Tony's secret family recipes for vegetarian chili and loosemeat sandwiches was in demand. Check the D.U. cookbook from the 80's for his "Sunny-Honey Wheat Bread" recipe. |
Another project being planned involves planting emergent wetland plant species at a newly constructed water treatment system in cooperation with the Somerset Conservation District and Somerset County Conservancy.
