The First Pennsylvania Greenwing Legacy was dedicated in a ceremony at the location. Corbins Island, Raystown Lake.
CORBIN’S ISLAND
PROVIDING A HOME FOR WATERFOWL AND A FUTURE FOR PENNSYLVANIA’S YOUTH
Located just downstream of Raystown Lake, the largest inland lake in Pennsylvania, lies the Corbin’s Island wetland restoration project. This wetland restoration project is located on the U.S. Corps of Engineers property and was completed in November 2002 through a cooperative partnership between Ducks Unlimited, Inc. and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with assistance from the USDA – Natural Resources Conservation Service, PA - Department of Environmental Protection, Huntingdon County Conservation District, Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps and the Pennsylvania Conservation Corps. The nineteen-acre restoration project has proven beneficial to local breeding species of wood ducks, mallards, hooded mergansers and Canada geese by providing nesting and brood rearing habitat. Additionally, the moist soil and emergent wetlands provide valuable food sources for both fall and spring migrations of waterfowl, shorebirds and passerines. Wildlife will not be the only beneficiary of this great project. Corbin’s Island was dedicated as a “Greenwing Legacy” project. Since 1974, the Greenwing programs conducted by local communities have created the perfect opportunity for youngsters to learn about wetland conservation. By exposing them to “the great outdoors” and the need for improving wildlife habitat, we are taking positive steps to ensure the future of our natural heritage.
A Greenwing Legacy plaque was unveiled at the site August 13th, 2005. The plaque displays the names of the first 100 members as the “new generation” of DU and Pennsylvania conservationists.
Lunch was serverd atop the dam breast of the Raystown Lake.
Sponsored by the Altoona Ducks Unlimited Chapter
Ducks Unlimited Senior Vice President, Great Lakes/Atlantic Region, Ron Rich gave
the Greenwing Legacys and all attending an interesting and informative
dedication speech.
Ducks Unlimited Biologist, Chris Clouser gave a background and
informative presentation of this important project followed by a walking tour of the
area and the valuable work that has been done in this project.
