WEST KENTUCKY WMA
Slough Enhancement

Purpose: To enhance 100 acres of moist-soil habitat on West Kentucky WMA through replacement of existing culverts with stop-log water control structures. This project will permit an extensive bottomland slough to be managed for production of moist-soil vegetation. In addition, the slough will provide excellent brood rearing habitat for nesting wood ducks. West Kentucky WMA does not have a pumping station. Therefore, the project is dependent on natural precipitation and backwater from the Ohio River. The area is managed by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to provide quality wintering habitat for waterfowl and offer public hunting opportunities.

Location: The project is located on West Kentucky WMA in McCracken County approximately 10 miles west of Paducah, KY.

Acres Impacted: 100 acres

Habitat Types: Moist-soil Wetlands

Partners: Kentucky Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resources
Ducks Unlimited, Inc.

Timeline: Construction was completed in September 1996
