Quivira NWR
Wetland Development and Management
PURPOSE: To enhance 150 acres of wetlands habitat on Quivira NWR. The George Stumps Wildlife Trust was instrumental in providing funds for this project through Ducks Unlimited. These funds were used to enhance 150 acres of wetland units by re-contouring the areas to be more water efficient. The funding provided fuel, construction materials, erosion protection, and vegetative stock to meet the needs of migrating waterfowl. Over 500,000 geese, 100,000 ducks, and 200,000 sandhill cranes annually use Quivira NWR as a migration stopover or wintering area. This project is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to maintain high quality moist-soil wetlands for waterfowl, while providing additional hunting opportunities for local waterfowlers.
